About Pakistan Super League (PSL)

Pakistan Super League (PSL) is Pakistan’s leading T20 tournament where franchises from six cities of the country battle it out for the title. Founded on 9 September 2015, the tournament has grown into one of the most popular T20 Leagues in the world and having started as a 5-team contest, they added one more in 2018 (Multan Sultans).

One of the great things about this tournament is that the first six seasons of it has witnessed 5 different champions, only Lahore Qalandars have been deprived of holding the trophy. Its unpredictability and enthralling nature have been two of the key components for its success over the last few seasons.

Islamabad United, the most successful team in the tournament (2 PSL titles), defeated Quetta Gladiators in the final in 2016 to become the first champions of Pakistan Super League. Quetta Gladiators suffered another defeat in the final in the next season, losing out to Peshawar Zalmi this time, leaving their trophy hunt in jeopardy.

They managed to get there in their fourth season of existence, by defeating Zalmi in the 2019 final. The newest entries of the tournament, Multan Sultans will enter the 2022 edition as the defending champions, who defeated Zalmi in the final last season convincingly.

The entire tournament will be held in Pakistan this time, unlike the last edition, where COVID-19 interruption abruptly stopped the proceedings and forced the tournament away to the UAE. Karachi will host the first leg of games, and all the teams will next travel to Lahore to play out the remaining fixtures.

PSL 2022 Teams

Islamabad United

The most successful franchise in the tournament, Islamabad United won the tournament twice, in 2016 and 2018. They have failed to reach the final since winning their last title, forcing them to make some stellar acquisitions for the 2022 edition to turn things around and lay hands on their third title. In terms of matches won, only Peshawar Zalmi (38) have won more games than Islamabad (36).

Shadab Khan will be leading the franchise this edition and besides the addition of Rahmanullah Gurbaz from Afghanistan, they haven’t recruited any other foreign cricketers. Reece Topley was drafted for the 2022 edition, but he will be unavailable for the entire tournament.

Peshawar Zalmi

No team in the PSL have made it to the finals more times than Peshawar Zalmi, having appeared in it 4 times. Out of these four, they lost three times in a row from 2018 to 2020, but winning it in 2017 remains their best achievement. They have registered the most wins in PSL history, winning 38 games thus far. They lead in the head-to-head record against all the teams in PSL except its newest recruits, Multan Sultans.

Veteran speedster Wahab Riaz will be leading the franchise this edition whilst Shoaib Malik, who will turn 40 in February, will be their vice-captain. They picked up some exciting local talents in the 2022 draft, and also added Australian all-rounder Ben Cutting to their side.

Quetta Gladiators

Despite having a sensational campaign in their first two editions, Quetta Gladiators fell just short of the title, losing to Islamabad and Peshawar in 2016 and 2017. They finally managed to get the eluded trophy in 2019 when they defeated Zalmi in a pretty one-sided contest. They are one of the three sides in PSL with over 30 wins to their credit (32) alongside Islamabad and Peshawar.

They recruited English openers Jason Roy and James Vince this season, who will be partially unavailable for the tournament. Shimron Hetmyer will be a stand-in for the side until these players arrive. They have also announced the signing of Umar Akmal and veteran Shahid Afridi, which will make a lot of viewers glued to their seats.

Karachi Kings

Under the leadership of Babar Azam, the Karachi Kings romped their way to their first title in 2020, where they defeated the unlikely finalists Lahore Qalandars courtesy of a half-century from Babar Azam in the run-chase. They made just one appearance in the final thus far and managed to win it. Only Karachi Kings and Lahore Qalandars have a win percentage less than 50 in PSL history and they’d be keen on correcting it this time.

They made some impressive foreign recruitments like Chris Jordan and Romario Shepherd, but neither of them will be able to feature in the tournament in 2022. The team will remain heavily reliant on skipper Babar and vice-captain Imad Wasim to take them through to the playoffs.

Multan Sultans

Former in 2017, the franchise took part in the PSL for the first time in 2018. They have done a commendable job since then, winning 20 games in 43 fixtures. They went all the way in the covid-interrupted 2021 edition, and were crowned champions for the first time, making Lahore the only the franchise in PSL without a trophy.

They will be led by their star opener Mohammad Rizwan, and the experienced Shan Masood will be assisting him. They roped in some outstanding foreign players like Tim David, Johnson Charles, and Dominic Drakes, alongside another crucial acquisition in Rumman Raees from the locals.

Lahore Qalandars

Despite never laying hands on the trophy, Lahore Qalandars are the most talked-about franchise in PSL. They finished bottom of the table in their first four seasons, before making it to the final in 2020. They struggled to make their presence felt for a long-time, but with some major acquisitions like that of AB de Villiers and Rashid Khan in the last few seasons helped them find some consistency.

Shaheen Afridi takes over the leadership duties from Sohail Akhtar, whilst Mohammad Hafeez has been appointed vice-captain at the age of 41. Phil Salt and Harry Brook will be joining the team midway through the tournament among the latest recruits.
